Ozark Scenic Riverways
There are two rivers that Stasia and I like to float every year for a weekend escape, both of which argumentatively claim themselves to be the “first” national river. They both have their own majestic qualities that bring us back year after year to cleanse our souls from work and life. One being the Buffalo River in Arkansas and the other the Current River in Missouri. The Current River, and its immediate surroundings, are federally protected by the Ozark Scenic Riverways and also include the Jacks Fork which is the Current River’s main tributary.
This remote and desolate area resides in the heart of the Ozark region and holds true to its wild and rugged history. Each time we drive through the area it makes me think how difficult it would have been to traverse the rugged and wooded terrain when Americans first settled the area. With towering tree canopies and tight and winding roads, it’s easy to lose track of which direction you are heading.
The area holds abundant wildlife that can only be found in this area of Missouri. Which can include deer, turkey, black bear, elk, and wild horses. And yes, I wrote wild horses. At first, I was shocked to read that there are still herds of wild horses living in Missouri. I’ve been told by people who visit the area that they’ve never seen wild horses and don’t believe me [but, fortunately we have pictures to prove it!]. Stasia and I have been very lucky to spot wild horses on several trips and always tell our friends traveling with us to keep an eye out for them along roadways, fields, and riverbanks.
The amazing wildlife does not stop at land either. The cold and clear spring-fed waters of the Current and Jacks Fork hold ample aquatic life that can easily be seen from your canoe. The best way to experience it is to bring your goggles and snorkel to see the beautiful life below the surface.
The Missouri Scenic Riverways is home to many historic and natural sites. We make it a point to discover new sites on each trip we take, whether it be a natural spring along our float route or a new park area or historic site. The Scenic Riverways will have you gleaning to come back for more. Rocky Falls is an absolute must - Stasia and I decided we will visit this site every time we’re in the area. Some days Rocky Falls is a small trickle and others, it’s a raging torrent in a matter of minutes after heavy rainfall. This is a popular destination during the summertime. Before you head to Rocky Falls, don’t forget charcoal, lunch, and swim trunks [and bikinis for the ladies]. The park provides grills and picnic tables, which makes for a great lunch spot.
A short and [semi] rough drive down the road will take you to the lesser known Klepzig Mill, which resides on the other side of Mill Mountain. Plan to take an SUV or truck down this narrow road, as it’s very rocky and scattered with potholes. The Klepzig Mill is more remote and doesn’t have as many visitors as Rocky Falls, which makes it well worth the drive. Once you arrive you will feel as if you are somewhere in the rocky mountains.
Each trip Stasia and I have been on, we have met amazing people along the way. We can’t believe that people come from all over the US to experience this great place. Both the Current and the Jacks Fork see a plethora of visitors throughout the year, with the peak period being during the spring and summer weekends. The Current river can be busy even into late fall due to being a heavily spring-fed river. If you wish to explore the rivers with less crowds, plan to make your trip mid week to avoid the weekend warriors.
Due to the river’s popularity, fishing pressure, and extremely clear water, fishing can be [very] challenging. I’ve been skunked on several trips and learned that if the fishing is off, its best to put the rod down and simply enjoy the float.
Before heading back home, make sure to swing by the Dairy Shack in Eminence, Missouri. This is one of our favorite dives; It’s a burger joint with an overly large menu and outdoor, covered seating. The food is incredible! Stasia and I have not been disappointed yet. I mean, really. Not much else can top off a great ending to a great trip than the Dairy Shack.
